The History of Occupational Medicine - taken from the Royal Australasian College of Physicians AFOEM Chapter.
"Bernardino Ramazzini is considered the founder of occupational/industrial medicine. He was an Italian physician, who was born on November 3, 1633, at Carpi, Modena, and who died on November 5, 1714, in Padua, Venice. His studies of occupational diseases and advocacy of protective measures for workers encouraged eventual passage of factory safety and workmen's compensation laws. In 1700 he wrote the first important book on occupational diseases and industrial hygiene."
As quoted by the Australian Government Department of Health, Occupational medicine takes a preventative approach to health and safety in the workplace by looking at how a work environment can affect a person’s health, and how a person’s health can affect their work. Environmental medicine is primarily concerned with the health impacts of industrial practices on the environment outside of the industrial site.
Occupational Medicine is experiencing a surge in popularity amongst Health Professionals, and is in high demand in ever changing workplaces that take a considered risk management approach to their workforce with proactive health monitoring and prevention programs.
Unfortunately, there are limited options available to Health Professionals to complete additional training to upskill in the delivery of Occupational Medical Practitioner services outside of Occupational Physician training and their scope of practice, which differs from an Occupational Medical Practitioner, Occupational Health Nurse or other Occupational Health Practitioner who typically screens and assesses workers in a primary care setting.
